How to Stop Junk Mail and Telemarketers

Monday, March 17th, 2008 | General, Tips with

Most of the time when you are completing offers, you may be required to supply your name, address, phone number, etc. Over time, you may start to receive more phone calls, your inbox being filled up with spam, and advertisements sent to your physical home address.  Let me give you an easy way to opt-out of all these sites through a few very simple and easy methods.

How to Stop Telemarketers

This may be already known by some of you, but for others this may be new to you.  There is a DoNotCall list that is monitored by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This DoNotCall list will greatly decrease the number of telemarketers you may receive calling your house. After adding your number to the website, telemarketers covered by the National Do Not Call Registry have up to 31 days to remove you from their list.

After these 31 days, any further calls from telemarketers, just state that you are on the DoNotCall list and you would like to be removed from their list. If they still continue to call, feel free to file a complaint with the FTC.

How to Stop Physical Mail / Junk Mail

Just recently, I’ve learned about a new site called DMA Choice by the Direct Marketing Association. Head over to here to learn how to stop physical mail from being sent to you. Online registration is free (or $1 to register through mail) and is good for three years. This should cut down on 80% of your unsolicited mail within four months.

How to Get Out of Email Lists

Another site by DMA Choice allows you to remove your name from email lists. You can do this by going here and entering up to three email addresses (you can add more after, just refresh the page). Once you submit your email addresses, your email address is added to a “delete” list that is available to companies to know that you do not want to receive further mailings.

Enjoy!

With regards to the “do not call” registry:

    My understanding (hearsay) is this:
If you register, you are covered, and all of the legal rights pertaining to telemarketing are yours to take advantage of.

However, If you complete offers (surveys, signups, etc. on GPT sites and particularly those where you are getting paid for a company to contact you with information, you are more or less forfeiting your “do not call” contract with that company, if you have given them permission to send you information. (Hey, if you are getting paid 5 bucks for them to send you info, it only seems fair.)

Wish I had known all of this from the begiining,
    but the bottom line is:
Set up a separate email addy for spam
Set up a separate phone number for spam
Set up a separate address for spam

    Hope this helps:)

thank you SOOOOOO much for this information.
I hate both spam emails and phone calls that expect me to listen to some schpeal about what ever they want to sell while my dinner gets cold and they cut into my family time.
I went directly to the site and put my computer emails and all phone numbers on the list.
    thanks again! James

Thanks for posting this info. So many people don’t realize that their info is being sold by the credit bureaus and it is easy to keep them from doing it.

Boy I think that everyone hates these telemarketers. I don’t have a land line telephone anymore so this did the trick for me. I just use my cellphone.

I hate to say it but I was too lazy to bounce all over teh web to sign up for this stuff. I got a membership with Myjunktree and did everything in one spot. I signed up for teh do not call registry, got my free annual credit report, stopped teh delivery of catalogs, phone books, credit card offer, and misc junk mail. It was super fast and easy. The best part is it I can check my mailbox once a week now. You should check these guys out.

It is indeed true that these marketing techniques employed by companies give you a horrid time. And its good that people are now coming out with ways to avoid such harassments.

To stop junk mail I been using http://www.MyJunkTree.com to stop junk mail, it provides me with a central location in which I can stop the junk mail and solicitations from more than 1300 catalogs and more than 5000 charity/nonprofit organizations, credit card companies, banks and data brokers, and stopping the delivery of national phone books. This green site also will plant trees with each new membership. As an added convenience you can sign on the Do Not Call list and get a copy of your credit report.
