Sorry about the delay in this new post! Been a very busy week, but an amazing weekend! Halloween parties are loads of fun ;).
So on part 1 of offline marketing tricks revealed, “C” asked:
I hear stories of people leaving business cards in phone booths, bus stop benches, or left behind in bus/taxi cab seats. I also hear about people making flyers with tear-off tabs and taping them to stoplight posts for crosswalk traffic in busy intersections. I can’t find real info on it - but is this legal?
To answer this, I had to a bit of research myself. What I found is that is LEGAL to place flyers and advertisements on the outside of the box, but it is ILLEGAL to place advertisements or flyers on the inside of the mailbox. The flag (if your neighborhood has individual mailboxes) should not be interfered with. If it is, it could be considered illegal. However, anywhere on the outside of the mailbox, as long as it “does not interrupt the postman/woman duties” is LEGAL.
Now onto the good stuff…
From what I hear, if you do end up doing anything that could be considered illegal, you would simply get a warning. But like I said, it is LEGAL to leave it on the outside of the box if it does not interfere with the job of the carrier.
Creating Small Advertisements
Alright, so now that we have that great question answered, let’s talk about creating small flyer advertisements. Through these, you can tape them to mailboxes, slip them through security doors, or rest it on the doorknob of houses.
One thing internet marketing has taught me is that you have only a few seconds to catch someones attention. So how do you do this? Through big, bold (and sometimes red) letters. And that is exactly what I have done here.
Here is a quick example ad I made. This was made on one page of Microsoft, which means for every 1 piece of paper, you will have 2 advertisements/flyers (this has been shrunk down to fit in the post):

As you can see above, I used big red font reading “How a FREE and SIMPLE Website Made Me $1503.43 in a MONTH”. This is to grab their attention. Right under that, I have the sub headline, which talks about what they get paid for. Then last, I have the call to action along with the URL.
IMPORTANT: Do not use your long referral URL on these flyers. No one is going to remember OR want to type out www.domain.com/register.php?referral=LongURL (you get the picture). Instead, use a free URL shortener called bit.ly.
Enter your referral URL on the site where it says to enter your URL, and be sure you click “Optional Custom Name”. Type the name of the site or something short and sweet in the custom name. This will make your URL look like bit.ly/XXXXXX (the XXXXXX is where your custom name would be). Refer to screenshot below.

If you went to Kinko’s or any other store where you can make copies of documents, pictures, etc then they should probably have a large slicer that can slice huge stacks of paper in half. I find this works better than hand cutting the fliers.
Where to Hand Out the Fliers
You can go ahead and tape some on the OUTSIDE of mailboxes, wrap them around the metal on security doors, tape them to the door handle (taping to the actual door might pull off paint). But there is still one great place you can pass out these fliers at where you will receive a major response.
Placing them in the window wipers of vehicles at local grocery stores. But not just any grocery store… you may want to go for the ones that people with less money shop at. I’m talking like $0.99 store or Goodwill. Now chances are, a majority of the people shopping there are there for two reasons. A) they want to save money or b) they are short on money and they spend less when shopping at the $0.99 store.
Whatever the case, they are going to be more open to the idea of making money online opposed to someone at a more expensive grocery store such as AJs, Safeway, Frys, etc (different states have different stores, hopefully one of those are in your state).
Try this out and let me know what kind of results you have! It’s worked wonders for me!
