Week 1: Web Host, Niche, and Domain

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007 | Website Creation with

Welcome to the first week of my “7 Weeks to Success“. Throughout these next 7 weeks, I will be covering how to create a profitable site that can easily earn triple figures, and even more if you follow my easy steps. The following content is what most people pay $97 for in those worthless eBooks. Fortunately, I am giving this all to you for FREE.

Alright, so what we’re going to be doing is creating a profitable niche site. Before we start this, you are going to need three things. The first is a web host. This is obviously the very first step. The web host will host your site on the internet. Since you are beginning, you will probably want to purchase the cheapest package. You can always upgrade. Out of the many web hosts out there, here’s a few I recommend:

Web Hosts

1) HostGator
HostGator
HostGator was my very first web host was HostGator, and I could not have been more satisfied. I love the fact that they have an easy interface, fast sites, no downtime, and if I ever had a question, I could speak to their technical support - THAT SPEAK ENGLISH! Use coupon code “iceishot” to get your first month for $0.01!

2) BlueHost
Host 6 Domains on 1 Account
BlueHost was recently awarded Best New Hosting Company and Best Customer Support by the some of the leading hosting review companies, so you know they are amazing. They have amazing cheap prices and you’ll never find your website offline!

3) 1and1
Hosting trusted by over 7 million customersCurrently, 1and1 is my host for all my websites. They aren’t exactly the best when it comes to support (they are all foreign and very hard to understand), but I have no problems with my site being down and they have a pretty easy interface which make tasks easier.

Picking a Niche

Now picking a niche is one of the toughest things for most people. Why? They want to write about something they like, but one that’s also very profitable. Just go ahead and take out a piece of paper and write down some things you would like to do, or possibly willing to learn more about. Some of mine would be computers, gaming, and marketing. From this point on, I will be using “marketing” as my niche.

Got your ideas listed on a piece of paper? Good, now let’s see how profitable these niches will become. Go ahead and type in that term at the Google Adwords Traffic Estimator. On the next page, you should see an estimated CPC as well as a column labeled as “Search Volume”.

Now this is where picking a niche that you enjoy, but profitable niche comes in. If your estimated CPC is less then $1.00, I would ditch it. It won’t be that profitable and would be a waste of time. For my niche, marketing, the estimated CPC is $2.47 - $3.67. That is a very profitable niche.

For the “Search Volume”, you would probably want to ditch the niche (hey, that rhymes) if the bar is less then half full. You do want traffic to your site, right?

One of the most common mistakes that people make is writing about something they don’t like. So many people create blogs all about lawyers (since it is a very profitable keyword), yet they have no desire to learn or even research lawyers. These sites end up dying because they have no traffic. Don’t make that mistake!

Domain

This is also very important. You want to have a domain that is short and catchy. Domains like “free-marketing-tips-and-information.com” are horrible because they are separated by many dashes, extremely long, and not catchy. You also always want to get a .com. Anything else will be mistaken by the .com version of that domain. It’s also important that you get your main keyword into your domain somewhere. If you want a good site to check for available domains, try Instant Domain Search.

So for my marketing niche, here are some domains that come to my mind that are brandable:
mrmarketer.com
ezmarketing.com
ezmarketer.com
marketingdot.com
marketcrate.com

Most of the above are taken, so I will have to come up with more ideas, but those are just to show you some domains that are brandable.

Ready to purchase that domain? Here’s some reliable domain registrars:

GoDaddy.com $1.99 Domain Names

Low cost domain registration, plus hosting and building solutions. Dotster does it all!

Make sure you pick a good domain, because once you choose it, your stuck with it (unless you of course buy a new domain).

This sums up the first week’s series of 7 Weeks to Success. Go ahead and start thinking about a niche, purchasing some hosting, and getting a domain.

You’re doing good things here, Drew. I’m trying to start my own wordpress blog myself and was wondering how you got the advertisements up in the top corner and the advertisements on the side?

This is great on your part. As you some people are selling ebooks for 97$ with just no information in it. You will always get better of them as you are offering it for free. People will start to trusting you , awaiting your next post in the series.

I think this is a great project and I like the way you have handled the first installment. In fact i like the idea so much I’ve made a post about it and offered a Christmas gift to those (few) out there who will actually read this series and _act_ upon it … free hosting for a site that is being built as part of this series. You can read more about it at:http://retiredpay.com/make-money/a-project-and-a-christmas-gift-for-you/
And merry Christmas and best wishes to evall from that old retired Guy, Dave

I have to admit, I wasn’t so happy with 1&1. BlueHost, on the other hand, has fantastic service … I’ve hit a tech up much too late in the night when I should have been sound asleep, and had issues ( mainly with awstats ) fixed within 20 minutes.
